BOOK SHARE
This year each student will be responsible for four (4) book shares. One book share will be due in each quarter. These are due on the date listed below. All of the shares will follow the same format. The books read must be 100 (or more) page chapter books/non-fiction books. Students should check in with me to be sure the book is appropriate for their reading level. It is important that the student does the reading and creating of each share on their own, with adults only offering advice. The reading and projects are to be done at home. Students may bring their book to school to read during silent reading time.
The book share format will be posted to this site very soon.

Book Share
In a book share, you will talk about the basic problem and solution, give a rating for the book, and include what you liked or didn’t like. Was the book so good you wanted to stay up late to finish it? Does your book make you laugh or think hard? Do you love the main character? Is there a lot of action?
HOW TO GET STARTED
1. Select a Book. Choose a book you are interested in. An adventure story, a fantasy, a sports book—it doesn’t matter. A fiction book needs to be 100 pages long or more. Bring the book to school to discuss it with your teacher before you read too much.
2. Collect Ideas. Use the checklist below to collect ideas for your book share as you read. Write down notes as you read.
3. Rough Draft: Use your notes to help you write answers to the book share questions. The questions are organized into paragraphs which need to include 3 or more sentences each.
4. Review your Draft. Have you answered and included all of information from the CHECKLIST? Did you write 3 + sentences in each paragraph? Are your sentences clear and on topic? Check to be sure spelling, grammar and punctuation are correct.
5. Check for Errors. Make sure you have spelled the author’s name and all words correctly. Also remember to underline the book’s title. After you have checked your review for errors, write a neat final copy.

NONFICTION MODEL
Here’s how David M. answered these questions in his review of a nonfiction (true) book.
Two Orphan Clubs
Two Orphan Cubs by Erika Kors is a true story about two bear cubs. One day their mother left them forever. Gary Alt found the cubs in the den hidden in a cave deep in the woods. They were very hungry and lonely since their mom had been gone for so long. Gary put the little bears, who looked like roly poly fur balls, into a sack. He safely and brought them to Molly’s den. Molly was a bear who had two of her own cubs and she treated the orphans like they were her own cubs.
This is a great story. I liked it because there was a happy ending. The pictures really helped me to see what the dens looked like. I felt like I was really there since they used real photographs.
Erika Kors did me a favor by writing this book. I learned that people can REALLY save animals’ lives! I think she wrote this book because she was interested in how bears live and survive. It would be great to help save sick or stranded animals someday. I’d like to find more books on this subject and by this same author.
FICTION MODEL
The Summer I shrank My Grandmother
Have you ever thought about shrinking your grandmother? You can read about this crazy idea in The Summer I Shrank My Grandmother by Elvira Woodruff. Julie was spending the summer with her grandmother in Maine while her parents went to the mountains to do research for their jobs. Julie was messing around with some old equipment in the attic when “POW!” it happened.
Wow! I want to read this book again. It was fun figuring out what the title really meant! If you like action packed in on every page, this is the book for you. I could really understand where Julie was coming from since my parents went away once and I got to hang out with my grandma too. The best part for me was when her parents showed up unexpectedly. YIKES! She had lots to explain.
This book shows how you can use your imagination. Ms. Woodruff must know kids need good ideas to fill up summer vacation! Maybe I’ll write a book next summer about my adventures! Stay tuned and maybe you can review my new book.
